Premium without pretense: What data (and palates) reveal about emerging wine trends

It’s an industry truism: premium wine is evolving. It’s shaking off the whiff of “pretension”. Today even the most traditional winemaker knows that they need to respond to changing tastes. Not to mention commercial reality.

Wine industry data is clear that “premiumisation” is the wine market’s dominant force. Where the market is growing, it’s in premium and super-premium tiers. Total volumes may be lower, but value is rising.

Crucially, this isn’t just about consumers drinking “better wine.” It’s about a changing consumer profile. The wine lovers who have driven much of wine’s growth for decades have consumed more at lower price points.

But today’s younger drinkers, particularly millennials and Gen Z, approach wine differently. They’re drinking less but better. They’re choosing more thoughtfully. And demanding quality and authenticity in every glass.

And in an important shift, “premium” no longer means “pricey” for the sake of prestige. Today, value means a wine that has earned its status through provenance, story, and distinction.

There was a time when first-vintage “icon” wines were launched at eye-watering prices. But today’s buyers look for brands with substance. They want regional uniqueness, heritage, and compelling narratives. Essentially the premium wine market has grown more sophisticated. And that’s both for wine lovers and for those who bring wines to market.

At Activequity, we’re watching the rise of new premium regions. English sparkling wines, Washington State’s bold reds, Portugal’s modern classics, and emergent South African terroirs. These are places where tradition and innovation meet and rewriting what “premium” means.

Yet there is a crucial detail. For a wine to truly be premium, it has to guard its essence.

Heritage matters. Whether that’s over five years or five centuries. People matter. Whether it’s a blend crafted by friends or perfected over generations. And land matters. Whether it’s a classic terroir like Chianti Classico or a rising star like Kent.

What unites premium wine success today is storytelling. A sense of place, people, and purpose.

Success in the contemporary premium wine demands more than wine knowledge. It demands for market insight and cross-sector experience. The ability to navigate trends that emerge from younger generations. Yet that remain anchored in authenticity and regional identity.

At Activequity, we know what matters to, and what drives behaviour of, premium wine consumers.
